Faces of Public Justice

Tiffany Kelly

Tiffany Kelly

When Tiffany Kelly took out a small loan from a payday lending company in Florida, she believed she was dealing with a by-the-books business. Kelly had been turned down for public assistance, and her bank would not lend her any money.

Barber family

Rich Barber

In 2000, Gus Barber was 9-years old when he was killed by a misfired Remington rifle. Since Gus’s tragic death, his father Rich has been gathering evidence about the faulty trigger design on Remington’s 700-series rifles; the defect has been a public safety hazard for more than half a century. Public Justice is now seeking to unseal court records that could prove Remington’s dangerous negligence.

WHAT WE DO

THE FIGHT FOR JUSTICE

Public Justice marshals the skills and resources of over 3,000 of the nation’s top lawyers to fight for justice through precedent-setting and socially significant litigation. We are involved in a broader range of cutting-edge, high-impact litigation than any law firm in the country – battling for consumers’ rights, workers’ rights, civil rights and civil liberties, environmental protection, public health and safety, and access to the courts.

THE ACCESS TO JUSTICE CAMPAIGN

Our Access to Justice Campaign is designed to expose, challenge, and defeat the assault now taking place on the right to a day in court. The attacks are taking place on numerous fronts in numerous fashions, but they all serve a common objective: closing the courthouse doors so victims can’t hold the powerful accountable.  The Access to Justice Campaign fights them, including federal preemption, mandatory arbitration, class action bans and abuses, outrageous court secrecy, and assaults on the Constitution.

PUBLICATIONS

Public Justice produces an array of publications, including books, newsletters, articles, brochures and special reports. Most Public Justice publications can be accessed for free online; others are available for a nominal cost.

EVENTS & MEETINGS

In addition to reports about our cutting-edge cases, the Public Justice Foundation's Annual Showcase features some of the top news- and decision-makers in the public interest community.  Our roster of keynote speakers reads like a Who's Who in the public interest community, including Morris Dees, Jesse Jackson, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and California Attorney General Jerry Brown.

Open to the public, the Annual Meeting is held each year in conjunction with the American Association for Justice (AAJ) Summer Convention.

Our Annual Gala and Awards Dinner is a popular summer stop for trial lawyers and the public interest community.  It is there that the finalists for the nationally prestigious Trial Lawyer of the Year Award are feted and the winner is announced.  Supporters can also test their bargaining skills in our lively live auction.  Invariably, the Annual Gala makes for an elegant, fun and inspiring evening.

THE TRIAL LAWYER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Every year, Public Justice proudly presents its Trial Lawyer of the Year Award to the attorney or legal team who made the greatest contribution to the public interest within the past year by trying or settling a socially significant case.

The winners, feted at our annual Gala and Awards Dinner, are chosen for an extraordinary victory in the public interest. Winners, finalists and their cases are profiled in our annual publication, Trial Lawyers Doing Public Justice.

THE HOGAN/SMOGER ACCESS TO JUSTICE ESSAY CONTEST

An annual contest for students at accredited U.S. law schools, the Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice Essay Contest invites future lawyers to put their knowledge, research skills, writing abilities, imagination and wit into an essay on a timely issue related to whether and how the courts can be used to obtain justice.  The winning essayist wins a cash prize and recognition in the Public Justice newsletter.

PUBLIC JUSTICE IN THE PUBLIC SQUARE

Whether in keynote speeches, panel discussions, legal articles, media interviews or on the Internet, our staff members and activists work to keep the public aware of the civil justice system’s vital role and how Public Justice’s impact litigation helps keep America’s courthouse doors open for everyone. Read more about scheduled speaking engagements,  articles and testimony by the Public Justice staff and leaders.
